Tesla Model Y Towing Capacity: After the success of the Model 3, the Tesla Model Y was released. The Model Y shares approximately 75% of the parts that went into the Model 3. The Tesla Model Y  can be considered a slightly larger/taller version of the Model 3. There are two important differences.

Tesla Model Y Towing Capabilities

The Tesla Model Y, unlike the US Model 3, is officially rated by Tesla to tow up to 3,500 lbs. The Model 3 in Europe is to be towable by Tesla at 2,006 lbs, but Tesla has not given the Model 3 Performance a rating for towing.

The US Model Y has a 3,500 lb tow rating. However, both Long Range and Performance versions share the same tow rating.

It is interesting to note that many people believed the Tesla Model 3 Performance was not capable of towing due to its 20″ wheels. The Tesla Model Y Performance, however, has larger 21″ alloys and has the same tow rating as the Model Y Long Range.

Tesla offers the Model Y with a $1,000 Class 2-tow hitch package. Tesla claims that the hitch can tow up to 3,500 pounds, but the vehicle’s tongue weight is unknown.

However, in several media outlets such as Model X. With a Model Y’s tongue weight of 300 lbs, I would expect a significant drop in the back.

A tow hitch is essential for a Tesla car that can tow items. Tow hitch sales are available at franchise stores for approximately 1200 USD. This will be in addition to your total car cost. You can also buy the tow hitch from an external source such as Torklift Central’s EcoHitch.

My Thoughts On The Tesla Model Y

As I stated, if I were going to tow the Tesla Model Y with my own vehicle I would opt for the official tow package.

This will allow me to access the official Tesla towing software updates that I am certain will be available in the future. In the Electric Road Trip video, you can see that the satellite navigation guided the car under a bridge.

You cannot currently add trailer height/width to the satellite navigation to allow it to select a suitable route. However, I expect an update.

A towing software update will allow you to enter the weight and general dimensions of your trailer for the Tesla Model Y.

This will give you an updated estimate of the towing range. Although it is impossible for the cars to calculate the drag/wind resistance trailer, a rough estimate of the towing range is better than none.
